Ten Questions That Transform Teams

INSPIRE

Highly effective teams don’t happen by accident. Bringing a group of people together to create a unified team takes intentionality on both an organizational and human level. And that intentionality needs constant nurturing.

But in the rush of day-to-day demands, that deeper work can easily slip away. That’s why it’s up to you, as the leader, to create regular opportunities for meaningful conversation, conversations that will ultimately shape how your team works, supports one another, and leads forward together.

And the nifty thing about it? Once you’ve carved out the time, you don’t need a flashy strategy or a complex initiative. You just need the right questions.

EXPLORE

These ten questions hold within them the opportunity for putting shared language to what matters most. They surface truths not yet voiced. And perhaps most importantly, they create space for listening, learning, and leaning into one another with greater trust and a strong, commitment-building foundation.

Each question serves a unique purpose, and together, they offer a powerful framework to strengthen connection, clarity, and momentum:

  1. What are our team’s greatest strengths, and how can we better leverage them for collective success?
Shifts focus to collective genius and possibility.
  2. In what ways can we grow, individually and as a team?
Reinforces personal responsibility within the collective.
  3. What are our shared goals and expectations for ourselves and each other?
    Clarifies direction and mutual accountability.
  4. What do we want it to feel like to be part of this team?
Sets intentionality and ownership around culture, belonging, and emotional resonance.
  5. What drives our motivation, and what systems help us stay committed?
    Connects purpose with structure.
  6. Where are our communication patterns thriving, and where can they improve?
    Invites both celebration and candor.
  7. What current challenges are we facing, and how might we collaboratively navigate them?
    Encourages co-ownership and constructive solutions.
  8. How can we intentionally support and strengthen one another to help us each be our best versions of ourselves, personally and professionally?
Expands support to include the full human experience.
  9. What silos or barriers exist, and how can we break them down to work in synergy?
Clarifies obstacles and promotes unified action.
  10. What does success look like for our team this year, and how will we know we’re making progress?
Brings vision and metrics into alignment.

A Tool for Real Conversation

When we used these questions at our leadership retreat a couple of years ago, we kept the structure simple but intentional. Each question was posted at the top of a piece of chart paper. We broke them into stations and rotated through them in small groups over time:

  • Step 1: Each person reflected individually, writing their thoughts on sticky notes.
  • Step 2: We then paired up to discuss and expand on our thinking.
  • Step 3: Sticky notes were added to the chart paper.
  • Step 4: After everyone had visited each question, we did a gallery walk to notice themes.
  • Step 5: We concluded with a full-group conversation to identify takeaways, actions, and commitments.

What emerged from that process became a springboard to renewed trust, shared purpose, and forward energy.

AMPLIFY

If you’re preparing for your own leadership retreat, or even just seeking a moment of realignment, these ten questions are a meaningful place to begin. They are designed to generate momentum through conversation, not just by answering them, but by listening to how others do.

Don’t underestimate the power of intentional space and thoughtful questions to transform how your team connects and leads.

Ask better questions. Build a stronger team. Lead with purpose.

Let’s continue the conversation – connect and share what conversations you have found powerful with leadership teams. Because together, we are brilliant.
