💡 A Dose of Inspiration

“Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand.”

— Mark Twain

When we laugh, we breathe life into community and possibility.

Laughter doesn’t distract from serious work… it resets us for it. It’s the sound of ego letting go, presence returning, and connection deepening. It’s also the sound of joy taking root.

🤓 A Dose of Learning

Deep in the midst of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln gathered his weary cabinet. What he read wasn’t a battle plan but a passage from a humorist, a reminder that laughter is wisdom in disguise.

Seneca agreed: “It is more humane to laugh at life than to lament over it.

A recent Daily Stoic message explored this very idea, the importance of laughter in leadership and life. Even the Stoics, who can seem all serious and philosophical, laughed… not to avoid pain, but to stay human through it.

That wisdom has become one of my own guiding values, captured perfectly in The Art of Possibility’s Rule #6: Don’t take yourself too seriously.

And shoutout to my favorite lifelong laughing partner, my sister Cynthia, a fellow ed leader and current rockstar principal. Whenever we’re together, one thing’s for certain: there will be laughter.

“Laughter doesn’t diminish our work. It deepens our humanity.”
— Culture of Belief

Humor checks ego, builds connection, and opens space for possibility.

In the heavy moments, I repeat one of my go-to mantras: take your work seriously, but not yourself.

Lead with lightness, and you set the stage for joy, giving others permission to do the same.

And when laughter fills your hallways? Now that’s the sound of a healthy culture.

🌀 A Dose of Action

We lead people through challenge, change, and complexity every day. It’s easy for the weight of it all to settle in, especially when you remember our purpose and the implications of what we do.

This week, notice where a little laughter might be the exact leadership move that’s needed.

Try this:

  • Lighten a moment. Start your next meeting or message with something that makes people smile.
  • Laugh with, not at. Use humor to connect, not deflect.
  • Model humility. Let your team see you laugh at yourself — it invites everyone else to exhale.

Because when leaders laugh, the room breathes again… and everyone remembers that we need each other, and why our work matters.

You got this. Let’s lead with belief.

In your corner,
