INSPIRE
Leadership is not about authority, but about impact. It’s about inspiring others to believe in a compelling, shared vision and helping them discover a way to contribute their genius to this shared journey. And when this occurs, remarkable things can happen.
But how do you inspire your team? How do you create a culture of commitment, collaboration, and excellence? It may seem like an elusive ideal, but in reality, there are concrete strategies you, as a leader, can implement to unleash your team’s full potential.
LEAD
1. Build Community: Weaving the Tapestry of Belonging and Shared Purpose

Spoiler alert: leadership is not a solitary journey. It’s about forging a community where everyone belongs – where individual stories intertwine to form a collective narrative. And the great news? We, as the beautiful messy humans we are, have a deep, soul-centered need to resonate with something greater.
One cornerstone of a thriving community is to establish a sense of unity around a shared purpose. Create pillars (mission, vision, core values, and goals) that are not just written on a wall but lived and breathed every day. When your team aligns around these, you’ll witness a powerful sense of purpose guiding every action. These pillars guide each team member’s journey, serving as a roadmap toward a collective vision that is beyond what any individual might accomplish.
2. Team vs Group: The Alchemy of Trust

In the realm of community, there’s a slight but profound distinction between being part of a group and being a member of a team. While a team is interdependent and mutually accountable for a goal, trust, that invisible thread that binds our emotions, actions, and commitment, is the foundation. It’s the unspoken assurance that every member’s strengths are valued, their contributions integral, and they’re surrounded by a network they can rely on.
While our brains are subconsciously scanning our environment for signals of threat or safety, our team members are interpreting cues (tone of voice, body language, responses, etc.) as affirmations of trust. Leaders who inspire are acutely aware of how they signal signs of safety and trust. Be intentional about modeling and creating the safety needed to nurture vulnerability.
Build and reinforce trust through transparent communication, cultivating self-awareness, and fostering a strengths-focused environment where every individual is aware of their own genius and how they can contribute in a unique way.

3. Clarity & Communication: Illuminating the Path
Communication isn’t merely a transaction of words; it’s the lifeline of every forward-moving team. Transparent and open two-way communication is the beacon that guides interactions. It ensures that everyone is armed with the necessary information to help nurture the culture, make aligned decisions, defuse misunderstandings, and strengthen connections.
In Turn the Ship Around, David Marquet describes a moment on his naval submarine when he gave an order that couldn’t be executed, but his crew followed it anyway. This exposed a dangerous lack of critical thinking and ownership among his team. From that point on, they adopted this mantra.

Consistent, intentional communication throughout a team creates frequent feedback loops that not only help a team make early, proactive adjustments but, because it pushes the information to those who are taking action, it empowers all members to be leaders. And bonus? It also builds trust.
A healthy, effective culture of communication is essential in creating positive momentum and handling challenges in a constructive, resilient way. It’s frequent communication of the vision, goals, and expectations, active and empathetic listening, and encouraging open and honest dialogue and feedback. By providing clarity and communication, you and your team will be aligned, engaged, and motivated.
4. Challenge Traditional Frameworks: Getting Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
Growth flourishes on the outskirts of comfort, and a culture that inspires champions the adventure of stepping into the unknown. It’s about challenging traditional frameworks and embracing discomfort as a catalyst for progress. Here, being uncomfortable is not just acceptable, it’s celebrated as a hallmark of individual and collective success.

To challenge traditional frameworks, question the status quo, experiment with new ideas and methods, and embrace the learning that comes with failure. Taking risks means facing uncertainty and ambiguity. By modeling and encouraging this courage, you will inspire your team to think differently, try new things, and grow and evolve.
5. Make Your Culture Visible: Celebrating the Story
A community’s culture doesn’t live solely within its actions, it thrives in the stories it weaves. Celebrations and stories aren’t merely markers of achievement, they’re a powerful way to add layers of meaning to what it means to be “us” while internalizing the core values of the team.
Take time to cherish victories, big and small, and turn those wins into stories that propel your team forward. This practice will honor the contributions of team members while inspiring them along the journey. And a bonus? It’s a powerful invitation for others in your community to join in creating a special synergy that is unstoppable.
By making your culture visible, celebrating, and telling your story, you gift your team and community with an impactful pride of who they are, what they are accomplishing, and why they do it.
6. Have Fun: Enjoying the Adventure
The road to creating something worthwhile and remarkable is never always easy. It can be a tempting detour to be overly serious and take every slight dilemma as personal. So one of my favorite team mantras is a great reminder to not take yourself too seriously and have fun along the way.

A team that embraces the fun an adventure brings with it, soaks in the excitement, and laughs along the way is a team that has built strong relationships and is resilient. As a leader, when we bring joy and lightness, we lighten those around us. Humor is a potent antidote to the challenges along the journey, offering perspective and fostering connections.
