Usually this space belongs to a voice other than the week’s featured guide. This week, I’m breaking my own rule. When the whole edition is a tribute to Dolly, it only feels right to let her open it in her own words.

She didn’t just say this. She lived it… rhinestones, big hair, bigger heart, and all. She knew exactly who she was and led with it.
That’s the invitation for the rest of us. The leaders who move people aren’t the most polished ones. They’re the most themselves. So, who are you when you lead? And are you doing it on purpose… with purpose?

🤓 A Dose of Learning
In this last week after her passing, so much has been written about the endearing and beloved Dolly Parton. And I’m here for all of it. Like many others, I’ve been inspired and impacted by her music, her life, and her generosity. (I wrote just a bit about it here.) So when Adam Grant re-released a podcast interview with her, I couldn’t get to it fast enough.
As always, time spent with her stories, life lessons, and her take on what it means to be a good human is time well spent. And this one held so many leadership takeaways that I just had to share with my favorite peeps. (yeah, I’m looking at you 😉)
Leadership Lessons by Dolly:
🫣 Reclaim criticism and take ownership of it: Be proud of who you are, and use your strengths to contribute meaningfully to the world. Tough feedback stings… that’s human. But when you’re grounded in your values, it’s easier to sift through what’s said, keep what’s useful, and let it inform the future you.
🤩 Dream yourself into a corner: Dolly describes a dream within a dream within a dream. She knows the hours and commitment it takes to turn passion into something real, and she carries a deep responsibility to keep those dreams alive. She’s not afraid of the work.
🔥 Professionalist, not perfectionist: Nobody wants to work with a perfectionist. As Dolly puts it, “They drive you up the damn wall.” She’d rather protect the heart of the work. If the first take carries real feeling, she keeps it, even when it isn’t technically perfect. That’s what resonates with people… not the 98th take that’s polished the soul right out.
💎 Turn mistakes into opportunity: When the spotlight’s on you and you stumble, use it. People get to see you being human, and how you handle it. Some of those moments turn out to be the most beautiful ones.
🫶 Model and nurture honesty: “It’s better to choose what you say than to say what you choose.” We’re all human. When you lead a hard conversation with humanity first, care comes through, even when the message is tough.
🌱 Grow your people: Dollywood pays for employees’ higher education, even if it means they’ll leave. Dolly invested in her people because it was the right thing to do… trusting that many would return and pour that growth right back in.
⚡️ Take time to re-energize yourself: Faith, family, and hobbies she loved kept Dolly “burning up” instead of burning out. A lesson we could all stand to be reminded of.
Grief and gratitude can share a seat. In fact, many times they do. And the tribute that feels truest to me? Leading a little more like Dolly lived… fully ourselves, unafraid to care out loud, generous with everyone in our path. With heart. With humor. With belief in the people we serve.
We can’t all write “I Will Always Love You.” But that kind of leadership? It’s a legacy worth borrowing. Imagine the ripple.

🌀 A Dose of Action
In “9 to 5,” Dolly sings about pouring yourself a cup of ambition. Adam asked her what that looks like today… and it’s a rich question worth carrying into our own leadership.
☕️ Start with you. What is pouring yourself a cup of ambition like right now? What’s filling your cup… and what’s quietly draining it?
☕️ Then ripple it outward. Here’s the leadership move: do you know how each member of your team would answer that? Not a guess. Their real answer.
So this week, ask one of them (or better yet, ask a team to connect around this), “What does pouring yourself a cup of ambition mean for you right now? What’s fueling you lately… and what’s wearing you down?”
Then just listen. That’s the whole activity. Connection rarely needs more than a real question and a little room to breathe.
